So my blog here is self hosted my other one [teensand.business.blog] is not. But which has done betterself hosting or wordpress free plan?
*My free wordpress site has been around a few weeks longer, but traffic didn’t pick up until after I started this blog as well i am not saying you should use what I say is better, I just find it better personally.*
Self hosting costs me £24 a year, this also includes a domain. here are some good things and also some bad things about this.
first the good things.
- This site has an opportunity to make money and place ads
- You get a .com domain
- It is a lot more customisable
- You have a lot more tool
- You can add plugin, such as yoast seo and jetpack
Now the bad things,
- This site does not get recognised on wordpress which is a main source of traffic
- it costs money and you do not get that money back until your site has enough traffic to make money.
There are a lot more problems these are just my main 2 that I find quite annoying. Of course as I mentioned before this site doesn’t make any money, this is just my site, you can make money with a self hosted blog you just need a lot of traffic.
Now for the wordpress free plan. this is for when you make a wordpress site but do not want to pay, my site is teensand.business.blog. Now I am not saying anything amazing can’t happen on a self hosted site, but my wordpress free plan site is doing so much better than this one, the likely hood is that no one will read this post here, but more than 30 people will on my other site.
On that site I am gaining about 5 blog followers per post, I know it doesn’t sound like much, but it’s better than 0, My current follower tally is 42 in less than 6 weeks – this is all down to wordpress.

See the image above that is what you get if you go onto wordpress.com. For wordpress free sites this is the main source of traffic. if you have good enough posts, they will come up on the recommended page, then people click on them read them like the post and follow your blog, its as simple as that but now starting with the good here are some good and bad things about wordpress free blogs.
- wordpress can direct traffic to your site
- there is a place where your posts could be recommended to someone
- it is free to setup
- you have access to many free templates.
Now for the bad things, again just 2 that I find most important
- you can’t make money unless you use affiliate marketing.
- you have limits on what you can do [no plugins etc.]
But in my opinion you should start with a free wordpress site, wait a few weeks to see if you are dedicated to posting and using the site, then you can upgrade to self hosting. However, if you are wanting to make money than do self hosting (i still recommend you start with a free blog). If you want to make money on a wordpress site you will have to upgrade the personal plan at £7 a month.
I would love it if you could visit my new site teensandbusiness.com. For more information view my recent post about it click here.
We hope we helped you chose between self hosted or wordpress free site, thanks for reading – The Teens and Business Team
